Pound Out The Tension


When we get upset,we either lash out at others or let it fester, brooding over it as if that alone will improve matters. The reality is,however,far removed: the longer we mull over our problems, the more overpowering they appear.There is another factor.Certain chemicals in our body like serotonin and endorphin regulate our moods.The less of these compounds we have in our bloodstream,the more morose we are likely to become. As these chemicals get depleted, our capacity to enjoy gets diminished, while the negatives get magnified. These chemicals come our way through the right foods. However, we are not able to utilise these properly if we lead a sedentary lifestyle. In other words, to feel good, you need to remain active.An active lifestyle not only does wonders to your physique but also to your state of mind.

The more exercise you incorporate in your daily routine,the more happy-go-lucky you will become.Researchers from the Center for Health Studies in Seattle analysed data from 4,671 women between the age of 40 and 65 and found a strong link between depression and obesity.These results indicate a link between physical and mental wellbeing. So,the next time you are feeling washed out, don’t lock yourself in your room. Even if you have no energy or inclination to exercise,wear your sports shoe and go for a long walk.When you come back an hour later, you will be amazed to find that you are far less agitated than when you stepped out of the house…. Dancing provides a great outlet for our pent-up emotions.Ideally,go the whole hog.Make it as brisk as possible. Dance without a care in the world.You may gain much more than new friends.The least you will achieve is a sunnier disposition.

Once you have pounded your feet vigorously for 30 to 45 minutes,a strange sense of calm dawns on you:it opens the blocked springs of restfulness and serenity that had been missing.The frustration that arises from lack of physical activity cannot be removed through spiritual means alone. Many spiritual masters, from Vivekananda to Osho,have suggested that the physical body can help you ascend to the spiritual level. In fact,dancing was an integral part of Osho’s meditation. Spectators find the dervish-like whirling by Osho’s followers to be futile, but there is a profound science behind it.The Sufis use a similar technique as well. The best option is to get out of the house — and walk,dance or hit the gym.But if that is not possible, start on a physically challenging activity,even if it is cleaning the attic. This will take your mind off your problems and dramatically improve your mood.Speaking of the attic,do look around: your long-forgotten skipping rope or dumb-bells might be lying somewhere there.
